Napa Valley, CA- Napa Valley, CA- This Zinfandel based blend shows aromas or ripe cherry and cedar with hints of rose petal and sweet oak. The lovely entry leads into a savory mid palate. Ripe fig and black currant dominate the finish with soft well integrated tannins.

Flavors of cranberry, red currants, plums and cassis all come together with a silky, smooth finish. A treat with veal and peppers in a light tomato based sauce or chicken-on-the-bone with a ginger based soy sauce.

The farmstead of Zaccagnini was founded in 1978 as a family-run winery, and today produces about 500,000 bottles per year from 100% handpicked grapes. While Abruzzo doesn’t attract Hollywood celebrities fleeing the spotlight or even many tourists, it has one claim to fame: Marcello Zaccagnini and his winemaker, Concezio Marulli, who are eliciting nectar from its rough hills. Marcello grew up as a farmer working in the vineyards owned by his father, growing grapes to sell to local winemakers. In 1977, barely into his twenties, Marcello determined that if no one would buy their grapes, he would work with his father to make the wine themselves. Cantina Zaccagnini is made of 100% Montepulciano and was aged traditionally in Slavonic oak. The resulting wines tend to be softer and more accessible than Chianti or Nebbiolo, with lower acidity and mild sweeter tannins.  Each sip delivers a mouthful of ripe berries, leather, and black pepper, with subtle hints of oregano, dried herbs, and a touch of vanilla.  (WB rating:  92 points)

Parcels of old vines 60-100 years in age, planted in soils of great character and complexity, provide the grapes for this wine.

"This powerful red offers a muscular core of roasted fig, blackberry and cassis fruit framed by thick, mesquite-tinged tannins, with loads of tobacco, pepper and tar coating the mouthwatering finish. Yet despite its power, this is racy and defined. Best from 2014 through 2024."

Lovely red fruit aromas of pomegranate and cherry are enhanced by scents of rose petal, cardamom and clove. With time, the wine unfolds to reveal orange peel, pipe tobacco and a distinct earthiness reminiscent of a woodsy forest floor. Flavors of blackberry, pomegranate, tangerine and clean mineral are concentrated, yet lively and buoyant across the palate. Fine tannins and balanced acidity sustain the persistent fruit through a long finish.

The clarity and concentration of flavor combined with the inherent structure will ensure many years of enjoyment and richly reward those with the patience to cellar. Decanting one to two hours before serving is recommended.
